Check-ins are big and clever.
A check-in is where you discretely, out-of-character, check that the people you are interacting with are actually OK and not being actually traumatised by particular content. You can do this before, during, periodically, and after any encounter.
Do it quietly, but make sure that the check-in question is clearly understood to be out-of-character, and that you are genuinely checking their welfare, and that you get an unambiguous answer – so that you then know you can continue without upsetting them or needing to stop.
